Cancellation of Club Lotus Parts Fair at Malvern  Posted September 23rd, 2010
Dear member,

It is with great regret that I must inform you that we've been forced to cancel the Club Lotus Parts Fair at Malvern on October 9th.

We've not taken this decision lightly, but feel we cannot run the event following a very poor response from the expected stand holders. To date we have only 10 autojumble stands booked and no Lotus traders at all - it would be embarrassing to call that a show.

I'm very sorry if you were looking forward to coming along but I'd prefer to take a tough decision now rather than have to explain to you when you arrived why there were so few stands to visit.

This doesn't mean there will never be another Parts Fair in the future and we'll keep you up to date with our show plans for 2011.

It also doesn't mean there's nothing happening at Malvern over the weekend of 9/10 October. Andrew Greenwood's long established and very big Great Malvern Autojumble will still be running on Saturday 9th together with his Classic Car Show and Autumn Spares day on Sunday 10th. Furthermore, we know that at least five of the autojumblers who had booked with us have simply moved into the main autojumble, so there will still be a Lotus element there.

If you have already bought advance tickets from us, they are still valid for the 9th, or you can apply for a full refund.

Best regards,

Alan Morgan
Chairman, Club Lotus

Lotus F1 visits update  Posted September 23rd, 2010
Alan Morgan, our chairman, asked Tom Webb about a block booking at a special price for Club members way back in April. This is OK in principle but there's a difficulty in that they've been swamped with bookings from the general public. They cannot accommodate all of these bookings just now. Alan Morgan is in touch with them on a regular basis. Hopefully, things will quieten down at the end of the season. We hope to be kept up to date with developments and inform members accordingly.

All British Field Meet - Brief Report from Portland  Posted September 17th, 2010
6th September, 2010

Hello Elite enthusiasts,

This weekend, I went to the All British Field Meet in Portland. There were several hundred British cars. I brought #1146. Yep, it's running again. Below is a photo of it with me and my oldest friend, Paul Hoeschen, who I've known for 50 years.

As you can see, I've gotten a little pot belly since I stopped going to the gym this summer. My back & chest have been a little sore for months, but I can see that my mouth & appetite must have been just fine. Otherwise, I walked 3 miles or so and had a great time.

Mike O usually comes to this event, but this year, due to the circumstances, I asked him to delay his visit. Mike was invaluable this week though, as #1146 needed an adjustable perch Koni and Mike overnighted it to me. Thanks so much Mike.

Lotus Elite at the All British Field Meet, Portland #1146 is parked under Chip Starr's tent. I parked it in with other Lotus cars in the morning, and at Chip's booth in the afternoon. Chip did a great job getting the Elite repaired for the event, stopping the oil leaks and making other pieces operational again.

#1146 was not the only Elite at the event this year. Brian Wertheimer drove #1281 down from Seattle (about 3 hours).

Lotus Elite at the All British Field Meet, Portland Lotus Elite at the All British Field Meet, Portland The car is stunning and in fact was voted Best of Show!!

My camera's white balance was acting up this weekend, so the great Periwinkle paint is not shown as it really is. I guess I could have been disappointed that #1146 didn't win an award, as it drew lots of attention all day and lots of votes, but Brian's Elite was definitely a better car and I was glad he brought it.

Saw Rick O'Hara sans #1406. The car has a nagging fuel pump problem. Also saw Bob Bentler & his wife Idona. Bob brought photos of his 2 Bearcat engines.

At the end of the day, I brought #1146 home and my other 2 Elites seemed happier.

All the best,

Greg

Peter Cambridge, a long time friend and supporter of Club Lotus Avon, passed away over the weekend of 12th & 13th June 2010.

Peter was involved in designing icons of styling, namely the Lotus Elite Type 14, Lotus Europa and Lotus Elan Plus 2, and also the Bell Jet Ranger helicopter - the world's most successful helicopter.

Peter attended as many of our meetings as he could and only ill health prevented him from attending recent meetings. Peter will be missed by us all, but never forgotten.

Robin Read was the guest speaker at Club Lotus Avon on Tuesday October 6th 2009. Robin's chosen topic was Lotus at first hand 1959-1962. Robin was joined by special guest Warren King. Robin provided us with an insight into the workings of Lotus at the time they were introducing their first GT Coupe, the Lotus Elite Type 14. Robin gave a complete breakdown of all of the problems associated with bringing the Elite to the US market. This insider's view provided a lot of information still not generally known even today, some fifty years after the event. Warren King, being Fred Bushell's right hand man, was able to advise us about the financial events also taking place at that time. Those of you who have seen the detailed lists of the Lotus Elite CBU records will know that these were all hand written by Warren.

Everyone attending enjoyed the evening immensely, and a big vote of thanks go to Robin & Warren for a splendid evening.

Mopar Muscle in the West Country  Posted August 23rd, 2009
It is not every day that you come across a Sixties muscle car, especially in the West Country.

The '68 Dodge Charger R/T in the photos has been the subject of a full rebuild and looks stock in appearance except for the wheels. The original 440 engine has gone to make way for a 528 HEMI; 8,653cc producing around 600 horsepower and 1,000 foot pounds of torque. Fuel economy is about 14 mpg when cruising and 7 (yes, 7) mpg when being used in anger.

The owner has just completed a few runs on the drag strip and is now considering the purchase of some rear slicks for increased performance on the strip. The car carries the UK registration 'HEM 528F' - very appropriate for a 1968 528 HEMI Dodge Charger.

New 6 speed all aluminium gearbox conversion  Posted August 6th, 2009
From Club Lotus HQ:

For Elan and Elan +2 owners - replacement and enhancement for the original '60s Elan.

New 6 speed all aluminium gearbox straight forward conversion using the majority of the original parts. No modifications to your car chassis, engine bay, etc. This will keep the car with an original appearance. Now could be the opportunity to enjoy your Lotus for modern-day conditions with the 6 speeder.

Neil Myers and his team of engineers, at the request of some loyal customers, have solved the conundrum of using these cars in today's day-to-day conditions. Neil looked at the 5 speed options including the obvious choice of the 5 speed Ford variations and decided that a more light weight unit with correct ratios (in true Lotus tradition) in the form of a modern 6 speed is the way forward. After looking at many options he has now found a suitable gearbox.

Bookings are now being taken for the installation; this normally takes two days, but we request that you speak to Neil as each customer's requirements and car condition will vary.

Very shortly we will hopefully have a demonstration vehicle for your perusal, i.e. to see the installation and to try out the vehicle.

Please call Neil Myers / Vincent Haydon partnership for further details:

Neil:  01604 644 982
Vincent:  01590 682 508 / 07860 391 320
E-mail:  vincenthaydon_AT_live_DOT_co_DOT_uk

Please note of course it is possible to have this installation fitted to other vehicles such as the Lotus 7, Lotus Cortina Mk1, Mk2, and Caterham Super 7; basically anything fitted with a twin cam or a 1600/1700 cross flow engine.

National speed limit reduction  Posted April 23rd, 2009
Here we go again; more lunacy from the ship of fools otherwise known as the government.

Cars are, of course, faster, safer, more efficient, and less polluting than they used to be. Despite this, the British government now wants to reduce the national speed limit from 60 MPH to 50. But then, these people haven't allowed common sense or wisdom to get in the way of their decision-making in the past, so why now?

If you have any remaining faith in this country's 'democracy', I suggest you sign the following petition if you DON'T want the limit reduced (only brought to my attention by Rob):

Search request - Jim Clark's second Lotus Elan CRO 291B  Posted September 6th, 2003
A series 2 car, Cirrus White, with a Radford red upholstery conversion.

Can anybody help me?

This car was for sale in Bristol during the spring of 1967 at the then main Lotus dealer Andrew Parkes at the top of Coldharbour Road, Redland. Has anybody any idea what happened to the car? I would be very grateful for any information, which is required for a book. Andrew Parkes is no longer with us so I cannot ask him directly. We might even manage some kind of reward.

Farley Mount Country Park meet  Posted July 31st, 2003
All Elite and Eclat owners are invited to bring their cars to an informal get together and picnic. The venue is to be Farley Mount Country Park, which is close to the village of Sparsholt, about 2 miles west of the city of Winchester, from 2PM on the afternoon of Saturday, 16th August; the Forest Rangers have promised to mow a special area for our cars, and all we need to do is come along with our cars, and whatever we like to eat and drink in the sunshine! There are woodland walks, good views, places for kite flying, etc.

Christmas Gifts - Elite Prints  Posted November 28th, 2002

What do you want for Christmas?

In 1956 Ian Jones drew a Lines drawing from the 1/5 scale model of the Elite. From this John Frayling produced the full scale model from which the original moulds were taken.

Ian and Clive Chapman have granted Club Elite permission to re-print this Lines drawing and we have had 50 copies printed. These A2 copies have been produced to be as near as possible true copies of the original Dyeline print. Each copy will be numbered and signed by Ian Jones and Peter Cambridge, who has been instrumental in the production of these prints.

With each print will be an explanatory note from Ian giving full details of the production of the draft.

Copies are available for the price of £48.50, which includes postage and package within the UK. (£50.00 ex UK).

These are available now and I will dispatch ordered copies immediately so that you can have the Christmas present that you really wanted.

To order, please send a cheque or money order made out to Club Elite, to John Mead. Yew Tree Farm, Toby's Hill, Draycott in the Clay, Derbys, DE6 5BT. (Tel: 01283 820377). Due to the limited number of the print run, orders will be restricted to one per person.

Christmas Gifts - Interview CDs  Posted November 28th, 2002

New CD releases from Yesterday's Racers

Earlier in the year I successfully released my first interview CD; a talk with former Team Lotus Chief Mechanic Bob Dance. Bob took us through his career from the very start, finishing with the 1969 Formula 1 season.

I now have my next CD ready for release, and by coincidence, it's with another Team Lotus man, Cedric Selzer. South African Selzer was mechanic to the great Jim Clark during his first World Championship year, and like the Bob Dance disc, he traces with us his career from a chance meeting with Stirling Moss at the South African Grand Prix in 1961 through his experiences with Team and finally his restoration of the ex-Clark Lotus 25 Formula 1 car.

Both discs are available exclusively from me, Gary Critcher, at 199 Green Lane, Shepperton, Middlesex, TW17 8DY, priced at £8.50 including P&P.

Please feel free to visit the website at http://www.yesterdaysracers.com, I'm sure you'll find something of interest there!
