New Lotus History book  Posted November 19th, 2015

Lotus History book by Graham Capel After five years of research and writing, Graham Capel's History of the Lotus VI will be published by Christmas. In fact, it is far more than the story of Colin Chapman's first 'production' Lotus of 1953. The book starts with the fabulously successful Austin 7 powered Lotus Mark III of 1951 and the innovative engineering of Colin Chapman and Michael & Nigel Allen when they formed Lotus Engineering Co. The Lotus Mark VI was the first space-frame chassis that they produced and was supposedly designed on a tablecloth in a transport café! By 1953 Mile Costin had joined Colin Chapman and the Lotus Mark VI began production as a customer kit car. After the first 25 had been sold, Colin Chapman turned his mind to the first Lotus aerodynamic sports racing car - the Lotus Mark VIII of 1954, and Team Lotus was formed. Meanwhile, production of the Lotus Mark VI continued and the Lotus workforce expanded into the sheds behind The Railway Hotel in Hornsey.

Another 40+ Lotus VIs were sold in 1954 and Colin Chapman then turned his ever developing ambitions to yet another Lotus model - the Mark IX for 1955 and international racing at Sebring and Le Mans. 1955 also saw the Lotus-Bristol developed by customer Mike Anthony and built by Lotus which became the Lotus Mark X as an afterthought! By the end of 1955 when production of the Lotus VI ceased, some 110 Mark VIs had been sold along with 7 Mark VIIIs, 24/5 Mark IXs and 5 Mark Xs. A total of some 150 cars in the three years since 1953 - and with a workforce of less than 10. Quite an achievement, but this was Colin Chapman and Lotus Engineering.

Graham tells the story of this early development of Lotus and the people involved with Colin Chapman, and the impossible stress which Colin drove himself and his associates to in order to achieve his ambitions. All of the cars are detailed by chassis number and/or driver as far as possible, and with the invaluable assistance of Lotus VI Registrar Charles Helps, as complete a picture and historical record has hopefully been attained based on present knowledge. Hopefully this book will lead to further information and 'discoveries' of unknown Lotus cars from this early period in Lotus history.

This hardback book of 225 pages is full of black and white period photographs, and is available at £35 plus £4 UK post and packing = £39 from:

Lotuseer Dennis Ortenburger passes away  Posted March 2nd, 2015
Sadly, Lotuseer Dennis Ortenburger has passed away.

I remember treating Dennis and his wife to a meal at the Bathwick Boathouse in Bath when they came over to the UK. Dennis was a great Lotuseer and a lovely bloke who will be sadly missed by everyone.

From Brian Caldersmith:

28th February, 2015

Sadly I advise of the passing of one of our very early members. Dennis Ortenburger died on Wednesday this week following a very short and tragic illness of just a few days.

A lot of members met Dennis on his two trips to Australia where he made many friends. He is also well known through his books (that substantiate his enthusiasm for the LOTUS marque):

Flying on Four Wheels (Frank Costin & his car designs)
Legend of Lotus Seven
Lotus Seven and the Independents
The Lotus Eleven
The Lotus Elite
Lotus Elite: Racing Car for the Road
The Red Leather Driving Gloves

Dennis was an intelligent, knowledgeable, enthusiastic person that made friends around the world and will be missed by many. We were fortunate to have he and Gail stay with us on their last visit to Oz and we extend the LEADFOOTS sympathy to the family.

Lotuseer Mike Warner passes away  Posted November 20th, 2013
Yet another Lotuseer passes away. Very sad that we are losing so many people at this time.

It is with regret that I have to tell you that Mike Warner died peacefully on 27th October 2013 at the age of 76 after a long illness. Maggie Warner and their children Julian and Vanessa will arrange a private family funeral, and in due course a Memorial Service will be held in the local area near Bury St. Edmonds.

Mike Warner was a significant figure in the Lotus story. He began with Lotus as a qualified Inspector on the Elite assembly line at Cheshunt in the early '60s. Before long he joined the Purchasing Department and became Purchasing Manager several years later. By the end of the '60s Mike was Manager of Lotus Components, producing successful competition cars for the racing world including the Lotus 69 F2 car and the Lotus 47 racing version of the Lotus Europa. The company also designed and released the Series 4 Lotus Seven before all production ceased. Mike left Lotus, and with others established the GRD racing car production company which flourished until the mid-'70s.

In retirement, Mike enjoyed restoring and driving a wide range of vintage cars. He will be sadly missed at a number of old car events in East Anglia.

Lotuseer Tony Pritchard passes away  Posted October 27th, 2013
Anthony "Tony" Pritchard passed away on Monday 21st October 2013.

Tony died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident two weeks previously. Tony was 74 years old.

Tony was going to give his talk on Colin Chapman in February 2014.

Yet another Lotuseer gone.

This sort of bad news just keeps on coming and sadly we can do nothing about it.

I will of course have to look at scheduling a different speaker for February 2014.

Lotuseer John Standen passes away  Posted October 1st, 2013
Sadly, I have to let you know that John Standen passed away on 9th September, aged 82, after a long illness. The funeral will be held at St. Faiths Crematorium, Norwich, NR10 3LF on Friday, 4th October at 2:45 PM.

John was associated with Lotus at Hornsey in the 1950s and became Purchasing Director for many years. He transferred to JCL Marine in 1973 where he remained until 1978.

Rosemary will be pleased to welcome all old friends and colleagues on 4th October.

With regret,

Lotuseers passing  Posted September 1st, 2013
We have also lost the following Lotuseers:

Freda and John Lawry.
John Lawry raced the second Lotus Elite and won the Autosport Championship. It only seems like a few weeks ago that John phoned about the Mike Costin event for 2014 and John's next talk to Club Lotus Avon, which John did not want to be too soon after his previous talk.

In addition, we have also lost John Coombs.

Sadly, we are losing too many good friends.

Terry Sanger, BRDC member - another Lotuseer passes away  Posted August 17th, 2013
Our very good friend Terry Sanger passed away on Thursday 15th August 2013 after being diagnosed recently with cancer.

Terry was a first class racer of all types of vehicle, and a great raconteur.

We will all miss Terry's wit, good humour, enthusiasm and larger than life personality, and his support for Club Lotus Avon.

Terry was due to be with us on August 6th 2013 but phoned to apologise that he could not make it due to feeling unwell.

I have fond memories of Terry Sanger; a great guy who will not be forgotten.

For Sale - Lotus Elite #1962

As readers of the CEN, you're all aware of Elite #1962's extreme originality and Greg's work to refresh it. You're also aware of Greg's desire to show it at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in the Preservation Class.

In hope that someone not only wants to own what might be the most original Elite in the world, but also enter the Elite in next year's Pebble Beach, Connie is putting #1962 up for sale as of today. Per Greg's wishes, CEN readers will be given the first opportunity to purchase #1962.

Please see the attached advert for more details on #1962.

If you're interested in purchasing the Elite, contact Connie Paris directly at the address below.

Two previous owners. Full history file. Used sparingly for track days by previous owner who had the car meticulously maintained by Pat Thomas at Kelvedon Motors in Spalding.

This can suggest that the car has been abused. This is not the case. It has been driven hard but as the manufacturer intended. The car has been carefully set up and is a pleasure to drive on the road, if slightly firmer. Backing off the damper settings restores almost all of the lost comfort, but I prefer the responsive feel that the track settings provide.

Both the interior and the exterior are unmarked and it would be hard to tell it from new.

It has the driver's handbook, radio instructions, and all documentation that came with the car, in the correct wallet.

I have owned it since 2007 and there has been absolutely no trouble apart from an immobiliser malfunction. This has been bypassed, but the Metar alarm is still fully functioning.

It does not happen often, but there is a new Elite on the market in Australia.

Bob Bennett has finally decided to divest himself of #1747 due to continued lack of use. Not an easy decision, but my guess is that his off-shore sailing has more than interfered with his priorities.

Those interested parties should contact him direct to discuss the whole affair at (02) 9974-5393.
